| We spent 5 nights in the BoI early in January. I got out for 1 swim by myself with the gun with instructions to bring home fish for dinner. Managed to stuff up a pannie snapper so then butterfish started to die. Had a look round a rocky point off Red Head Island looking for kings (Cliff Rock?? I think). It was pretty fishy but didn't see any kingfish until I had pretty much thrown in the towel and was swimming back to the boat in 6m or so of water when a school of smaller kingfish with the biggest round 10kg swam past - so I shot 1. I had to hold on to the gun handle to keep it out of the weed. Got back to the boat and decided I should gut the fish. The kingfish (which I had thought I had ikied properly) had one last flick of the tail which sent my dive knife off the bait board into the depths. Headed back into Te Uenga Bay before midday to see my wife, the kids and a friend of ours on the beach waving at me - turns out they had seen dolphins in the bay so we shot out to look for them. Once we had given up looking we actually found them and spent some time watching them (no one tried to get in the water and I was being skipper). By the time I got to the point of carrying fish up the hill to the bach I was stinking hot! I also spent time over the break taking my kids and others (10 - 13 yr old) out with the polespear - but they don't want their photos spalshed round the internet. - Phantom Menace |
