Always dreamed of doing this trip. Studied Google Earth, watched the weather and swell patterns and Monday was it. On the water at 8am from Pauanui South - a solid 6k paddle to the beach at Slipper. Checked out the camp grounds, look fantastic - bring on summer. Paddled another couple of k to Rabbit and Penguin. Kitted up, grabbed a cray for the neighbour then worked an old favourite weedline stuffing up a JD and watching a big kingie (25kg+ I reckon) ghost past out of range chasing the prolific baitfish. Headed to my snapper spot and spooked a few 4-5kg models. Peered over a promising ledge at Penguin and watched 5m below a fish mucking around through the weed. Probably a moki. I moved down and the fish appeared in full view, a solid 8-9kg model. Unfortunately I was fully in view, so I ghosted down and kicked - placing a shot in the gill plate, but at a distance. It roared off parting ways with the spear, bummer. No boaries on the weedlines. Lunch on a secluded beach, then another hour long paddle home. Stoked to have pulled this trip off. I will be back in summer - Snoop
