So, managed a couple of weeks break with the family up in Rarotonga, based out of Avana entrance in Muri Lagoon. Not much of a spearo's tale, but a quick update for those going there. Muri is on the eastern side and is exposed to the predominant NE swell, there are FADs off this coast but pretty much "hit and miss". The FADs off the north end toward the west past Avarua were working. My father-in-law went for an idiot sitck with 6 others, no bites over 5 hours, but tuna working. Wahoo starting coming in next month, marlin season ends in March. If your heading up these, use these guys, they have a Stabi and are spearos http://www.bluewater-adventures.com/. Costs $250-$300 for 3 hours. I wouldn't do a dedicated spearo trip up to Rarotonga itself, but still, a great place to go I opted for shories. Clearing the break at Black Reef (northern end), also worked through the Arorangi School passage. Majority of fish life is inside the reef swell break, reefs dropping off slowly to the deep. Here's a tip, bring a gaff to get back in through the passages, I had to use my spear flopper as a pick to hold onto the reef coming in. Scary. The majority of my diving was at the Avana Harbour entrance in Muri Lagoon just a couple of hundred metres from the jetty The passage is a few hundred metres long with 8-12m ledges on either side. Schools of large mullet and plentiful fish life in the ledges. Shot a blue trevally and mullet on the break, tied them off to a boulder by the jetty after a dive and came back 15 minutes later after seeing to the kids in the pool - everything gone. A big GT came through later on while my father-in-law was fishing. Nice Really enjoyed the warm 30 degree water. With daily swims, got the breathe up by my standards to 50 seconds a dive to 1.35 waiting on the sand. Inside the ledges found my first coral trout, grouper (camo coloured?) and tried my best to black out inside caves shooting crown squirrel fish (kinda like goldies). Had visits from the resident white tip reef sharks, turtles, banded kraits and spotted eagle rays. Played cat and mouse using the diadema sea urchins as burley (bad move, still have the evidence in my finger) with some solid parrots, unicorn fish and a feisty blue trigger fish. A bit of fun. I left the majority of the fish alone due to cigi. Spoke to a local spearo and he pointed out the fish I could take (normally smaller models also) - Snoop
