Day 1 of the trip I headed out from our house "Siri ni ka" in the village of Matei on Taveuni island in northern Fiji. The house had Kayaks and I paddled the 600m or so out to the edge of the inshore reef system. Anchoring up I headed along the drop off snooping over ledges, looking into caves etc - classic reef spearing. Small fish abounded while larger ones were a little harder to see let alone approach. Working out to the deepest part of the reef over time I headed down over a series of ledges and peering down to the sand bottom next to a cave this cod was looking straight up at me. Taking care not to move much I drifted down within shooting distance and placed a good shot down through his head exiting near the tail; - he wasn't going anywhere. It was starting to get dark so I headed back to the kayak, loaded up and started to head back to the house - right into the 15knot SSE winds which prevailed pretty well the whole 10 days on the island. It was a big double seater Kayak and it was hard going keeping the nose into the wind - any stronger and I would have been in trouble. New lesson one of the trip (I'm no expert Kayak spearo that's for sure). Anyway the caretakers family was thrilled when I gave it to them. I was in heaven. Wife and kids happy at the house, an extended Whanau to feed who was appreciative of any fish I caught them (and who would clean and cook it) ... it doesn't get any better! - Kingie
